Worship

At Jonesborough Presbyterian Church, worship is the heart of our community, a sacred space where God meets us in Word, prayer, and sacrament. Following the example of the early church in Acts 2:42, we gather to learn, to break bread, to pray, and to grow in faith together.

In our worship, ears are open to hear God’s truth, eyes are closed in prayerful reflection, mouths are open in song and communion, hearts are open to Christ’s presence, and doors are opened as we are sent into the world as bearers of good news.

As a church that is Reformed and always re-forming, we strive to present the Gospel in ways that are both faithful and meaningful for every generation. Our worship is rooted in tradition, yet relevant to today’s world, embracing the unique gifts of our congregation—young and old alike. Whether through scripture, prayer, music, or mission, we worship with thoughtfulness, joy, and gratitude, always in fellowship with one another.

Sunday School

Sunday School at Jonesborough Presbyterian Church provides a welcoming space for all ages to deepen their faith, explore scripture, and engage in meaningful conversations. Adults can choose from two engaging classes—the Granny Broyles Class, which follows The Present Word curriculum for discussion-based biblical study, and the Lectio Divina Class, which uses a reflective approach to scripture. Both classes encourage thoughtful dialogue and spiritual growth in a supportive community.

For younger members, our Nursery, Elementary, and Youth Classes offer interactive learning through stories, music, art, and service projects, using age-appropriate, Reformed theology-based curriculum. Additionally, we offer seasonal studies, such as our upcoming Lenten Book Study, featuring The Life of the Beloved by Henri Nouwen. Whether you are new to the faith or have been on this journey for years, Sunday School is a place to learn, grow, and build lasting connections.

Centering Prayer

"Be still and know that I am God." – Psalm 46:10

Centering Prayer is a Christian contemplative practice that deepens our awareness of God's presence. Described by Thomas Merton as “finding one’s deepest center, awakening us in the presence of God,” this form of prayer has been practiced since the early church and invites us into silence, stillness, and spiritual openness. Unlike spoken or petitionary prayer, Centering Prayer is about resting in God’s presence, allowing space for divine grace to move within us. It is not meant to replace other forms of prayer but to enrich and complement them.

At Jonesborough Presbyterian Church, our Centering Prayer group gathers weekly, following a simple yet meaningful rhythm: scripture readings, reflections from contemplative authors, a twenty-minute silent sit, and closing prayers. Whether you are new to contemplative prayer or a longtime practitioner, all are welcome to join.

Mission Work

At Jonesborough Presbyterian Church, mission is at the heart of our faith, as we seek to serve both our local community and beyond. Through hands-on service, we share Christ’s love by preparing meals for the Day Reporting Center (DRC) and UKIRK at ETSU, supporting food security through our Community Garden and JAMA Food Pantry, and participating in home repair projects with Appalachia Service Project (ASP).

Whether it’s packing food boxes, cooking meals, or assisting families in need, there are many ways to get involved. Volunteers are always welcome—no special skills are required, just a willingness to serve. Join us as we live out our calling to be the hands and feet of Christ in the world.

Congregational Life

At Jonesborough Presbyterian Church, we believe that faith is strengthened in community, and our Fellowship & Congregational Care ministry is dedicated to fostering relationships, welcoming new members, and providing support for our church family.

We gather for Family Lunch every other month following worship, offering time to connect over a shared meal. Game Nights bring us together for fun and friendly competition, while our Soup Ministry provides warm, homemade meals to those in need during the colder months. Additionally, we host new member gatherings to welcome and help newcomers find their place in our church community.

Whether through shared meals, fellowship events, or caring for one another, this ministry is all about building relationships and strengthening the bonds of faith and friendship.

Shalom Circle

Shalom Circle is a vibrant and welcoming women's ministry at Jonesborough Presbyterian Church, dedicated to faith, fellowship, and service. Through devotions, prayer, and mission outreach, we seek to nurture spiritual growth while building an inclusive and caring community of women within our church.

Our ministry extends beyond gatherings, as we actively support local, regional, and global outreach efforts. In addition to our mission work, Shalom Circle also oversees the church kitchen, provides meals for funeral services, supports congregational celebrations, and assists with events like Vacation Bible School and Easter sunrise service. Our annual December dinner and auction help fund these ministry programs.

We meet monthly on the first Saturday at 10:00 AM in the Fellowship Hall, with special scheduling adjustments for October and December. Whether through service, fundraising, or simply offering support to one another, Shalom Circle is a place to reflect, grow, and serve together. All women are welcome—come and see how you can be a part of this meaningful ministry!
